On-Demand Manufacturing: The Why and the How

Posted by baker miller

Our previous blog post discussed the criteria we used when looking for a factory to make our garments. From the moment we decided to start baker miller, we were dedicated to producing in the USA. We wanted to support communities and US jobs first and foremost. We also wanted to know that our factory’s workers are paid fairly and enjoy their work.

There are many other advantages to producing in the USA. Made in the USA is known for craftsmanship and quality. It allows us to be fast and flexible with changes and decisions. Unlike abroad, we can produce in smaller batches, hold smaller inventories, and provide quick delivery to customers.

Manufacturing here also allows us to keep a close eye on production and quality control, ensuring our garments are perfectly made.

Another issue that has plagued the fashion industry is pollution and waste problems. There are increasingly high CO2 emissions when large quantities of clothing are produced overseas.

In addition, unwanted garments and unused fabric are being burned or ending in landfills. According to the EPA, in the US in 2018 (most recent data available), 9.1 billion pounds of clothing and footwear ended up in landfills. The fashion industry is under pressure to manufacture in a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable manner.

Customers are becoming increasingly aware of where and how products are being made. We know that you are looking for quality products that are made responsibly.

With that said, baker miller is doing things a bit differently. All our pieces are made-to-order. By producing on-demand, we do not carry extra inventory and only create clothes when ordered, reducing fabric waste. This means no overproduction, no excess.

We can accomplish this by partnering with our state-of-the-art factory in Phoenix, Arizona, Bespoke Manufacturing Company (BMC), which specializes in an eco-friendly, on-demand production model. They are solely focused on made-to-order manufacturing and have a minimum order quantity of one!

BMC is committed to ethical business practices. Your dress is made by employees paid above a fair living wage and offered paid time off and health insurance. They hold regular safety training sessions and have dedicated safety support. Employees are offered training opportunities to learn new skills and increase their pay. They have an open-door policy with management. Since the onset of COVID, the factory has followed guidelines set by the CDC to provide a safe work environment and make all of their employees put their health first.

Here are some photos from our factory:

Each dress is made-to-order, just for you. Ordering is easy as 1-2-3: pick your style, color/print, and size.

Dresses are produced on-demand once an order is placed and shipped within 4-6 weeks. You’ll receive a notification when your order has shipped.

Each garment must pass a quality inspection before being shipped out.

Transparency with our production process, sustainability, and the desire to support local communities are the primary reasons we wanted to produce in the USA. Your purchase helps support local economies and ensures fair wages and good working conditions while lowering your environmental footprint.

We are more than just pretty dresses.
